Kevin Snyder

Well, Everything!

I was hanging with the family

Over at Papa Tom's

It wasn't very long before

Another pitcher came along

We were drinking and swapping stories

Once the pizza was all gone

Not one to shirk my duty

I filled my mug up to the brim

Somehow my mug got empty

So I filled it up again

My sister's eyes grew big as saucers

As she scolded me through sarcastic grin

You should have, not more beer

I never heard it put more succinctly

Never heard it put more clear

I had yet to reach my limit

But I was getting pretty near

To the point that I should have

Not more beer

My voice kept getting louder

Words slurring in all their glory

Embellishments are required

To make things sound not so boring

I'd gladly forego the truth

If a lie makes a better story

The crowd was thinning and the sky grew dark

At last call I bought one last pitcher

Oh the look on my sister's face

How I wish I had a picture

As she scolded me one more time

Like a preacher quoting scripture

You should have, not more beer

I never heard it put more succinctly

Never heard it put more clear

I had yet to reach my limit

But I was getting pretty near

To the point that I should have

I should've had, not more beer

My sister had spoken wisely

But I was too drunk to hear

Next time LuAnn, I promise

I will listen sister dear

And heed your words telling me to have

Not more beer

Honest

I aint lying this time

Not more beer

At a family gathering in my home town of Idaho Falls, ID, we had a pizza dinner at the local pizza place Pappa Tom's. I may, or may not, have had some beer and when I went to pour another my sister LuAnn admonished me saying "You should have not more beer". The rest is history.

Well, Everything!

Why invite impropriety when there's none to be found

Where's the sense in sparking speculation, why be the talk of the town

A rumor without reason is as bad as any other

And the talk you'll hear them talking will be down in the gutter

So staying is as useless as a ship without a rudder

Unless, you've got something in mind

You've got something in mind

I've done all that I can do to show you that I can be trusted

The situation has turned, and I fear I might be busted

Sam the Sham, kept his sheep suit on

And I'll keep holding out, but I don't know for how long

Before I break I should color myself gone

Unless, you've got something in mind

You've got something in mind

If you've got something to say, well I'm all ears

Will you fulfill a dream, or confirm fears

I've had for years, bringing me tears

I should go don't want my welcome overstayed, or eyebrows raised

In a rush to judgment wrong conclusions are drawn and idle gossip is made

Rumors without reason, are equally destructive

As a knight in shining armor, I should be more protective

And so i make my exit, quiet and respectful

Unless, you've got something in mind

You've got something in mind

You've got something in mind

You've got something in mind

Everything else!

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

Make right with the ones you've wronged before it's too late

There might be no Maker, might be no pearly gate

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

Some say life is a trial

Just the dark before the dawn

I say leave only love, only love behind you

Because this train keeps rolling on

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

Make right with the ones you love before it's too late

You might be a martyr, Lord knows we make mistakes

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

When my days are numbered

Moonlit nights now washed out black

I will have only left bright markers

For those who travel down the track

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

Make right with the ones you've wronged before it's too late

There might be no Maker, might be no pearly gate

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

You might be a martyr, Lord knows we make mistakes

We're all gonna die someday so you'd better lay them tracks straight

We're all gonna die some day

So you better lay them tracks ...... straight

My band at one time discussed covering a Crawdad Republic song. The general consensus was that it should be "We're All Gonna Die". I submitted this, but it was not well received. It is long, but I dig it!

4Why Do Dogs Hate The Mailman3:55https://roslo.com//Discography/Random_Offerings/04_why_do_dogs

John Thayer

Songwriter

Kevin Snyder

Songwriter, Vocals, Guitars, Bass

Burning questions, intractable problems

Salacious secrets, unscrupulous lawment

Leaving us all so beleaguered, or at least a little intrigued

Is this the way it really all should be?

Why are all these castles made of sand?

Why's it such a hassle for anyone to understand

That love is all that matters in the end?

Why do dogs hate the mailman?

Fascinations, illicit obsessions

Midnight encounters, bringing our judgment into question

Is it better to just come clean, or stay hidden behind some screen?

Always barking up the wrong tree

Why are all these castles made of sand?

Why's it such a hassle for anyone to understand

That love is all that matters in the end?

Why do dogs hate the mailman?

Take a look inside yourself to see what you can see

Take a headlamp, a pickaxe, a thermos with some tea

You can dig for gold, or pan for it in streams

You can mine your soul with questions and come back up with broken dreams

Painful lessons, in teachable moments

Creative solutions, to work around our problems

Not entirely legal, or at least a little suspect

Is this the way it really all should be?

Why are all these castles made of sand?

Why's it such a hassle for anyone to understand

That love is all that matters in the end?

Why do dogs

Why do dogs

Why do dogs

Why do dogs

Hate the mailman?

I co-wrote this song with the great John Thayer. Out of the blue, John sent me the first verse and the chorus, so I added a couple more verses and the bridge. John massaged them a bit and I recorded this version. Ultimately he released a version with slightly changed lyrics on which he sang and played guitar. You can find it on his album "The Hottest Record of the Year".

It was the perfect moment, caught in space and time

Hand in hand we joined, hearts became entwined

In the cathedral of the mountains, next to a babbling creek

there is a calm that washes over, giving us the peace we seek

It's a bond that will not break

It's a faith that you can't shake

And composes us, at our very core

It's the lessons that we have learned

It's the character in us that's burned

By the generation, that came before

The wonder of the sunset, with hues of orange and red

There's a chill in the evening air, curbed by the crackling fire

Warmed by the fire glow, guitars strum to tapping toes

Our voices ring out in the night, with the old songs we know

And if you listen very carefully, and let your mind be calm

You can hear the perfect harmonies of our Dad and Mom

It's a bond that will not break

It's a faith that you can't shake

And composes us, at our very core

It's the lessons that we have learned

It's the character in us that's burned

By the generation, that came before

By the generation, that came before

Written as a Songs on the Vine writing assignment to write a song about a picture that is meaningful to you. I wrote about me and my siblings joining hands at Birch Creek in Idaho.

I've been up, I've been down, I've been kicked around

It's just the same old thing

I've been stuck in a rut going off my nut

Doin' the same old thing

When it comes to you, my feet are stuck in glue

It's just the same old thing

I keep hanging on, but are we too far gone

In this same old thing

You push me away

We're like a leaky old boat I try to keep afloat

It's just the same old thing

I keep bailing fast, not sure how long I can last

Doin' the same old thing

I'm tired of thinkin' I can keep us from sinkin'

In the same old thing

The last time I checked we were up to our necks

In the same old thing

You push me away

I look in the distance and see a bright future

Where everything's happy and new

My frown's upside down off this merry-go-round

I keep spinning around with you

So, that's how it goes

So, I think you should know

That I'm moving on from doin' the same old thing

And trying something new

I'm stepping away

Yeah I'm stepping away

Because you pushed me away

You pushed me away

Follow me down to the river

Out the pier and to my boat

Shadows cast upon the water

They speak of doubt

Follow me into the mountains

Up the trail and to the lake

We'll watch the sunset on the ridge line

Bring on the night

Should I lay you down or let you run away

Let my chips fall where they may

If you stay, and should you follow me

My doubts and fears would be belaid

Follow me into the city

Bask in the glow of the neon lights

Never quiet, always moving

It never sleeps

Should I lay you down or let you run away

Let my chips fall where they may

If you stay, and should you follow me

My doubts and fears would be belaid

Follow me on one more journey

Moving silent beyond the veil

Always quiet, always peaceful

In eternal rest

Won't you follow me

Follow me, oh follow me

Won't you follow me

Follow me, oh follow me

Well I put my mind in recall mode

Not so very long ago

I was thinking 'bout a girl that I used to know

I was thinking 'bout the hurt inside

And thinking 'bout the nights I cried

When everything she told me was a lie

So I drifted down into no man's land

I was sifted through like hour glass sand

Nights I was so drunk I coSuld not stand

Now I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

To lose my past

Now I'm walking down a winding road

Looking for a place to go

I'll try to find a place that I can call my own

I know that I'll find it one day

I'll find a job and earn my pay

And I'll leave her memory far, far away

And maybe I'll find somebody new

Maybe raise a child or two

And we'll live off the golden sun and the morning dew

Now I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

I'm looking, to my future

I'm looking, to lose my past

To lose my past

Massacre Rocks through Devils Gate

Four of five met their fate

Shoshone rise, American Falls

Last thing they heard was a battle call

Register Rock shows those who came

In volcanic rock they etched their names

Wagons filled with all they own

Seeking land where the natives roam

Emigrant trails to Oregon homes

Littered with the blood and the fallen bones

Right of passage price was paid

Built upon the foundation that they laid

When newspaper men editorialize

Writing what becomes history 'fore our very eyes

Legends are made from the exaggerated lies

Facts be damned, becomes our heritage prize

Massacre Rocks through Devils Gate

A story told to stir up fear and hate

Copyright 2024 Kevin Snyder, All Rights Reserved

In August of 1862, there were a series of skirmishes between bands of Shoshone Indians and emigrant wagon trains on the California and Oregon trails in the vicinity of a volcanic feature known as Devil's Gate in southeastern Idaho. Although the number of lives lost heavily favored the emigrants, newspapers at the time called the attacks a "massacre" and demanded the government take action. In 1912, a newspaperman promoted rebranding the Devil's Gate as "Massacre Rocks" to draw tourists and capitalize on the dramatic legends of massacred emigrants. This song was inspired by these events.

Well I've been out drinking and thinking of you

I can't help but wonder what you've been up to

Have you been drinking and thinking of me

Well that's wishful thinking, I know it can't be

Daylight is harsh, adds to the pain in my head

Along with the echoing tones, are the words you never said

Well this seems familiar, I've been here before

It was the last time you knocked on my door

I see you there, it begins my downfall

Forever, completely, at your beck and call

Fate can be harsh, when it comes to the hand it dealt me

Stars will never cross, lovers will never be

Well you got me believin, so I keep deceiving

Myself, thinking everything's fine

I abandon all reason, I'm on my knees pleading

And hoping you'll give me a sign

When I close my eyes, you're all that I see

I know in my heart I can never be free

But should you come looking I'll leave you this clue

I'll be out drinking and thinking of you

I'll be out drinking and thinking of you

I'll be out drinking and thinking of you

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that shot him dead

I took my gun and just because put a bullet in his head

I know I'll burn in hell

For this mortal sin

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that did him in

She was walking home one night from the corner store

He raped her and he stabbed her then she was no more

To the D.A. his friends all said

That he was somewhere else

Shake my hand 'cuz I took him out all by myself

He was living proof that evil walks the earth

Is 20 bucks and change what a life is worth?

When the justice system failed

He heard my magnum sound

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that put him down

Now I'm hiding from the law that wants to take me in

Vigilante justice is considered fringe

But I stand by what I did

And that's what I'm all about

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that took him out

I knew that they would catch me, just a matter of time

A jury of my peers found me guilty of the crime

And when that pellet drops

I won't be here for you

To shake my hand for doing what I had to do

Shake my hand 'cuz I'm the man that shot him dead

Babe, you know that I love you

And you've been a true blue friend

I'd follow you to the ends of the Earth

And then follow you home again

You are the kind of person

That everyone longs to be

But now I'm caught off-guard with your request

Why would you ask such a thing of me

No, no, no

I ain't gonna do that

No, no, no

No matter how many times you ask

No, no, no

Won't you please leave me alone

How many times do I have to tell you

No, no, no

I've kept so many promises

And yes, I've been keeping score

It seems no matter how much I do for you

You always ask for more

But a man has got his limits

And now you have reached mine

So listen closely to what I've got to say

I'm saying no for the very last time

No, no, no

I ain't gonna do that

No, no, no

No matter how many times you ask

No, no, no

Won't you please leave me alone

How many times do I have to tell you

No, no, no

I may not be perfect, but I'll always be myself

I've given all I can give, my love, time and wealth

Don't take me for granted and just put me on a shelf

No, no, no

I ain't gonna do that

No, no, no

No matter how many times you ask

No, no, no

Won't you please leave me alone

How many times do I have to tell you

No, no, no

I'm telling you no, no, no

I'm telling you no, no, no

Putting a worm on my fishing pole's hook

Hoping for a big old trout from a itty bitty brook

That childhood memory is clear as can be

But them good old days are long gone for me

A warm sleeping bag in my Mom's front yard

Me and my friends sleeping underneath the stars

So many stars and satellites to see

But them good old days are long gone for me

I'd gather pop bottles from the side of the road

To a kid like me they were as good as gold

Trade 'em in for money over at Kelly's store

But them good old days they are no more

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Late at night I'd be lying in my bed

Transistor radio pressed to my head

Only station I'd get was K I D

But those good old days are long gone for me

Winter time finds me at the snow covered dunes

Sliding down on an inner tube from dawn 'till noon

A quick lunch break then back on the hill

Them good old days gave me such a thrill

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Learning guitar from my brother Paul

John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, John Prine et al

All those songs we still play today

That good old music is here to stay

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say

Today I'm making new good old days

Them good old days, them good old days

I love to reminisce about them good old days

The best part is and I'm here to say
